EDITING AND PUBLISHING THE NORTHFIELD HANDBOOK

The Northfield Handbook is done on desktop publishing.  Currently, it is in QuarkXpress.  The Handbook Coordinator needs to be familiar with desktop publishing for the best and easiest results, as well as familiarity with working with a printer.

Putting together the Handbook begins in late March/early April. At that time, contact the Program Chair(s) and request that they begin collecting all the information for the book. The best way to accomplish this is for them to take the previous year's book and go through it page by page, marking all changes - preferably in the book itself.  This makes doing the changes for the current year much easier.

In addition, the Program Chair(s) need to provide all quotes or graphics they want sprinkled throughout the book, as well as the logo that goes on the cover. The logo can also be repeated through the book. This is a decision made by the Program Chair(s) but the Handbook Coordinator can make suggestions.

Once all changes are made, a final draft is mailed to the Program Chair(s) for thorough proofreading and final corrections. It is then returned to the Coordinator who makes the final changes and takes the book to a quick print place to produce the necessary copies for the Conference.  (This number is based on the Registrar's counts.  Always add at least 50-75 to the count for needed extras.).

The color of the cover is determined by the Program Chair(s). ONE WEEK is the shortest amount of time to give the printer to produce, fold, and staple the books.

(Note: this time frame could change depending on the printer used. It is best to determine this at the start of the process.)
